Goals, motivation, and what’s important

Posted by Josh Shear in Conversations

This will be the last post on JoshShear.com until the weather turns. I'm not going to pretend I'm shutting down the blog (I've tried that several times to no avail – I just keep coming back), and I'll still be blogging on the Get Fit blog and at Gold's Gym Syracuse, and I'll still be checking in (though noticeably less for the next little while) in online social spaces (don't worry, boss, just my personal accounts).

But conversations with people around me and some reading I've done lately remind me that I have more important shit to do.

Last week, I read blog posts by both Raj Ganpath and Alwyn Cosgrove about identifying your goals, and identifying the obstacles that stand in your way.

Take two: Identifying my goals. Identifying my obstacles.

One of my obstacles is perceived expectations in online social networking. I say perceived, because I don’t know actually know what the heck people want, or require, or whatever. I mean, nobody calls me to tell me what I should be doing.

And it took me a little while to come to I just don’t care that much. I mean, I do like having all you people around, but I don’t need you for validation. I’d rather see you than tweet you, and if we’re going to tweet a conversation, I’d rather have it while I’m looking at a computer anyway (say, at work), rather than holding up household projects that are more important to me. After all, I really am the only one who really cares if they get done.

I tend to hunker down for the late autumn, long winter and early spring, so there will be plenty of computer screen time then. Hopefully we’ll connect in real life sometime soon.

Enjoy the time off, Josh. I completely understand the part about more important things to do. My blog slipped when I took on a new job but I do miss it and want to write posts when I can squeeze in the time. I agree that it does seem hard to leave a blog in general. Also, I can understand the challenge in identifying your obstacles and goals without feedback. Some people need the validation, and some don’t. Good luck and I’ll expect some posts come fall!

Good on you, Josh. One of the big bits of craziness out there right now is “personal branding.” Unfortunately, I think so many people are hung up on that, banging away at Twitter, blogging relentlessly. Here’s what I’ve learned: 1. I blog when I want to, because I want to. Yes, I always feel like I should write more often, but I blog for me — not my audience. 2. What matters is not what the anonymous people on Twitter think of me, but whether I think anything at all about them. I’m done with follower counts, Klout scores, mentions and retweets. And life is really more fulfilling when you sit down and have lunch with a real person.

Which reminds me….we need to grab lunch soon.

I Agree to you Josh. I complately understand the other part of the important things to do. and specially we must estimate our time. specially to our job. and our family we should do the very important thing of our life.

I learned that by accepting that I can’t do all things at once would prevent me from looking foolish. I make sure to take things step by step and focus on what is important. You are right about determining the obstacles. I think this is a very important part in the preparation when aiming on achieving a goal.
